SAINT-AMANCET PICNIC AREA

Saint-Amancet is a quiet village at the foot of the Montagne Noire, in the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc, on the road to Santiago de Compostela. This charming location hosts houses dating largely from the 19th century. It is organised around two main squares with fountains. The water comes from the Avaris spring. It allows you to quench your thirst in the shade of plane trees and children can enjoy the playground. To be discovered : Numerous hiking trails will make you discover its quarry (with its sought-after coloured gravel), as well as the charms of the forest with its flora and fauna (Saint-Amancet is a Natura 2000 site). Not to be missed: Last weekend in August, the local festival. Its "vide grenier" (garage sale) on Whit Sunday. Tourist curiosities : The church of Saint Barthélémy shelters a relic of Augustin SCHOEFFLER, an apostolic missionary beheaded for the faith on 1 May 1851 in Tougking, and various statues of saints (St Roch, St Michel, Blessed Joan of Arc...). The cemetery: contains a stone cross whose arms evoke the Maltese Cross, an extraordinary tomb from the 19th century consisting in a stone funeral chapel belonging to the Fauré de St Maurice family. The common oven dating from 1882-1884. Place known as "Forêt de Boulbène": near the Avaris spring. There engraved markers were planted in 1519 to mark the limits of Sorèze and Saint-Amancet jurisdictions. The castle is the place where Louis Félix Marie François Franchet d'Espèrey, Marshal of France, died in 1942. He is buried in Saint-Louis des Invalides church in Paris. There are many caves including the Aven Viala, one of the deepest cavities in the Tarn department.
